Often times there are tools that make every project a breeze. Having the right tools that fit each need is essential. In the learning process of sewing, I started out with no mat. Taking my first sewing class utilized the knowledge in how to learn how to read basic pattern project packets and the basics of sewing. However, as I had increased my yearn to sew, I’ve discovered that a self-healing cutting mat was crucial. If you are interested in cutting material and want to quilt, a cutting mat and a ruler along with a rotary blade is a must-have. I first started out with a Fiskars Rotary Cutting Set that can be purchased online or at your local craft store. The kit comes with three items, a large cutting mat, a rolling cutting blade, and a ruler. The mat measures 18 x 24”, it is double-sided and self-healing on both surfaces and has helpful measuring grids to guide you in your cutting process. The blade is a rolling 45 mm blade that cuts through multiple layers with ease and a 6 x 24” clear Acrylic Ruler that has grids and assists in the cutting process. As time progressed, I later purchased an additional board, also from Fiskars, and the mat size was 23 x 35.” I couldn’t have been more happier with this investment.
The Fiskars Rotary Cutting Set was worth every investment. I also like the replaceable blades that are available in these rotary cutters. The cost of replacing the blades are small and the blades last pretty long depending on the amount of use of the blade. The board has very minimal scoring lines on it from all the use. Having a self-healing mat is awesome and worth it. If using a cutting mat that is not self-healing, the rotary blades tend to wear down even faster and the dust particles from the fabric cutting become lodged into the cuts on the board.
Happy sewing and don’t forget to pick up one of these kits!
