As you bite into a Voodoo Doughnut, you experience the lush sweet and soft doughnut salivating in your mouth. Their doughnuts are moist, light and also very fun to eat. They are fun because of the decorations and added toppings on top of the doughnut. With the three different doughnuts we tried, they were fun, tasty and full of flavor. The three we tried were the Voodoo Doll doughnut, Mango Tango doughnut and the Neapolitan doughnut. Their doughnuts are festive and fun because of the toppings that they have, for instance you are able to order a Voodoo Bubble doughnut and it is accompanied with a bubble gum on top or another popular one is called The Loop doughnut that has Fruit Loops generously topped with the doughnut. Voodoo Doughnut is not your average doughnut shop with the basic and old fashioned doughnuts like Uncle Joe’s Donuts you can order from a more traditional doughnut shop. I must say that out of all the three flavors we tried, my top favorite was the Voodoo Doll doughnut, coming in second was the Neapolitan doughnut and third would be the Mango Tango doughnut.
The Voodoo Doll doughnut has just the right amount of chocolate, the doughnut batter was light, fluffy and bounced back as you took each bite while the flavors of a pretzel and face on the doughnut made it even more fun to eat. The Neapolitan doughnut is a chocolate cake doughnut with a vanilla frosting dusted with some strawberry flavor and three marshmallows in the center. The chocolate cake was a balance of not too dry or not too moist and not too thick. The marshmallow and the strawberry flavor were also tasty. I must say though, I was a little taken back with the flavor of the Mango Tango doughnut. It was a very sweet mango jelly filled doughnut that was topped with a vanilla frosting and tang. A very different and extra sweet experience with the last one.
I would say that if you are prepared to stand in a long line to visit this iconic doughnut shop in the Downtown Portland area or visit one of their five locations, be prepared unless you happen to visit at a non-peak hour. Keep in mind too that they are a cash only joint. I would hate for you to stand in line and be ready to order and not have any cash on hand. Also, the Voodoo Doughnuts also supports local community organizations that benefit the community as well. So just know that you visiting and ordering some delicious doughnuts at this joint also benefits those in the community.
I am glad that I made a trip out to visit this place and was lucky to find no line due to me going off the peak hours and in the middle of the week. The environment inside is clean and decorated with much of the Voodoo décor and name. I can now say that I have checked off one more item on my bucket list when visiting Portland, Oregon. Don’t be surprised that when you arrive into the Oregon International Airport (PDX) you will see the iconic pink Voodoo Doughnut boxes as travelers are carrying the box to board the plane after visiting. There will always be a Voodoo Doughnut at least spotted once when traveling to and fro Portland, Oregon, maybe you will have the chance to check them out when you are in the area.
